Slide Notes

Welcome
We are all here today because we truly believe that we can make a difference to peoples lives through the outcomes from research.

Lots of questions that came through from Belinda and what i am going to do is quickly cover off some of those that are really grouped together and then I want to talk about some higher level thinking about grant application writing.

I will just go through the slides and maybe we should have discussion at the end if that suits.

Dissemination
Communication
Knowledge Translation

Dissemination plan - this is about outputs - typically end of grant activities.
Includes reports, publications, book chapters, flyers, public seminars, stakeholder feedback

Communication - this can be for both during the grant and end of grant.
Will include things like how you will communicate with stakeholders, collaborators and other team members during the research process. Could be about social media strategies to communicate the process and progress of your work.
May include reporting and other media.

KT plan - Includes all of the above and more.
Strategy, specification of partnerships, roles, goals, implementation, evaluation and impact measures.

Impact and KT

Is a question about "impact" asking me about KT?
This follows on from having a KT plan. To get to impact you need to have a plan. It does not matter if things change but you need to have some ideas and planning around what would ideally happen.
Using your plan and the measures that you have for your goals you should be able to add to the section on impact in your grants. Remember there are big differences between short and long term impacts and you need to be clear about these.

High Level

Grant considerations
I want to now go through some high level thinking of the grant process overall. To get to impact or to translate our knowledge into tangible and relevant outcomes we need to have a diverse set of skills. We need to be good communicators, have great connections and networks and importantly we need to have influence.

"Success requires the ability to inluence".

I want to run through how you can be more influential in your grant writing.

Not always about the best science/project - It's about the best pitch

In business we say that its not always about the best product or service...

Clarity

Be clear on your objectives - Why are you writing the grant?
Be clear on your objectives. Knowl why you are writing the grant....its not about getting funded! Its not about your CV!

Credibility

Direct & by association
Direct credibility is your own publications, presentations, conferences, awards etc
By association is the credibility that your collaborators, stakeholders and other researchers have that by association you now have.

Passion

Not just another grant application
Evoke this in your message. If you are not passionate about your research how can you expect others to be.When you deliver or write with passion people listen.

Relevance

What problem are you solving? Why is it important?
Be very clear on why your research is important and very relevant. why should they fund you?

Start with why

Simon Sinek (The golden circle) ted talk.
Inspire others and be inspired.
Why should someone care about your research proposal?

We are good at talking about what we do and how we do it but very few people can clearly articulate why.

Why is a purpose, a cause, or a belief It is about our contribution to impact and serve others, it inspires us.

What and how do not inspire action.
When you communicate your "WHY" purpose first you communicate in a way that drives decision making - influencing behaviour.

Speak to the part of the brain that controls emotions, behavior and decision making. Get people to believe what you believe.
