Now, this morning I was trying to get ready for school & I saw my snowboarding boots.

What if I wore these snowboarding boots to school?

Wouldn't that be an uncomfortably warm, hard to walk, kind of day!

Where would I wear these boots to?

Why?

Well because they're for snowboarding!

This leads me to...

Purpose

You need to think about the book you're going to choose just like your shoes.

Are you going to choose a cook book to get information to write a report about a famous Idahoan?

Are you going to wear dance shoes to PE?

Of course not!

Purpose.

Deciding why you need or want to read a certain book.

Now, back to this morning.

I was looking in my closet to choose my shoes & saw these ballet shoes.

Do you think I'd choose them?

No?

Why not?

Yes, you're right!

I probably don't want to wear ballet shoes, since I'm going to be here in the classroom.

I don't even dance ballet

This leads me to...

Interest

You need to think about the book you're going to choose just like your shoes.

Are you going to choose a book with a character you don't like?

Would you buy hockey boots if you hate hockey?

Of course not!

Interest.

Deciding if the book will engage you.

You should always read the back of a book or even several pages before you can decide if you're interested, that's the best way to find out!

Are you going to choose a book that has words you've never heard before or talks about things you don't understand for your animal book report just because it looks interesting & is about animals?

Of course not!

Comprehension.

Making sure you understand what the book is telling you.

Knowledge

You need to think about the book you're going to choose just like your shoes.

Are you going to choose a book that teaches you the ABC's or one that you can finish reading in less than a minute.

Of course not!

Knowledge

Make sure that when you're reading, you're learning something.

Increasing your knowledge that's the goal!

Different Shoes

I want you (choose student) to trade shoes with you (another student)

This is just like books!

Even though these shoes fit ____ they don't fit _____!

Books that are a good fit for one student may not be a good fit for another!

That's okay
