Let's talk about email

  • It's a great way to communicate with people you know
  • You can share pictures, and work files
  • You can use it to store work in the "cloud"
  • It can be more convenient or appropriate than calling

  • There are some dangers you need to avoid
  • You need to know some tips to stay safe
  • You need to know how to protect yourself
  • You need to know how to protect your computer

You are out in cyberspace!

  • You need to protect your personal information
  • What is Personal Information?
  • It's your name, age, gender, where you live, address,
  • parent's names, school....anything that can let someone contact you
  • Don't give it away so that some stranger can find you

How do people get your personal info?

  • Phishing. No I didn't spell it wrong!

Definition of Phishing:

  • Phishing emails try to get you to send your PI
  • They look like real mail from real stores, banks, companies, etc.
  • They often rush you into sending your information, can sound threatening, e.g. https://www.phishtank.com/what_is_phishing.php
  • They're PHISHING for information, hoping you bite!

What to do?

  • Don't answer the email
  • Just delete the email
  • If someone really wants to get in touch, they will.
  • If you're not sure, show an adult or teacher

SPAM

  • Spam is email garbage
  • Your in- box will fill with junk
  • It's annoying and can trick you into giving PI
  • You got it from a website that asked for you for PI!
  • Never click on a link that says "Remove your email address"

Scams

  • People try to get money from you
  • Just send me $10 and I'll give you a million!
  • Just fill out this form for a free prize!
  • You are the lucky winner just fill in..
  • Tries to trick you into giving PI!!!

Last but not least

  • Viruses.
  • Yes your computer can get sick
  • If you open an attachment a virus can come out
  • That's why we have anti virus software
  • You need to have that at home

So to be safe

  • If the email seems strange don't open it
  • If you don't know the sender don't open it
  • Do not open an attachment w/o an adult
  • Ask your parents if you have anti virus software
  • NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PI!
