"A 2010 study commissioned by security company AVG found that 92% of U.S. children have some type of online presence by the time they are 2 years old. A third of U.S. mothers posted pictures of newborns, and 34% of U.S. moms said they had posted sonograms of their as-yet unborn child." (http://www.cnet.com/news/study-92-of-u-s-2-year-olds-have-online-record/#!).

Thinking point: Do you think these trends are on the rise?

Let's think...where did you post your last selfie?

Start to record where you have published or left your digital trail.

Pass the blinking cupcake to quickly share what you have recently posted online & where.

Pass our cool blinking cupcakes back and forth with your partner/team, telling each other what/where you have posted to the Internet recently. It can be a selfie or anything.

After we stop, please choose at least one thing that your team mentioned, and add it to our backchannel: https://todaysmeet.com/DFTouchpoints

Hint: Control your image

  • Check often.
  • You are who you follow.
  • "Work" your profiles.
  • Connect via smart networks.
  • Make needed fixes.
Explore this social media experiment in MS/HS: http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/minnesotas-teachers-social-media-experiment...
The post had been shared more than 351,000 times, had over 48,000 likes and 217,000 comments, including locations of where it was shared to.

Use multiple search engines to check your public identity; set up a Google Alert for your "handles." And do more, as advised here: http://theinnovativeeducator.blogspot.com/2010/07/controlling-your-digital-...

"Quotes found on the Internet aren't always accurate."

~Abraham Lincoln
Right! Who said that??

Regardless...even though we know this...when you mess up, the Internet, your "public," and those not even on your current radar screen WILL assume that YOUR views are intentional and accurate. Oh dear!!

"While 90% of survey respondents claim to be cautious about their online posts, 35% have posted comments containing profanity, more than 30% have posted comments or pictures about alcohol and 7% have posted content about illegal behavior.
While students and grads may want to post photos of personal and social interactions on their page, employers are looking to see if candidates have a good sense of what should be public versus private, says Shama Kabani, CEO of The Marketing Zen Group." (http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/06/03/what-your-social-med...)

Think...What would grandma (or your boss) say?

Hint: Be smart

  • You are who you follow.
  • 10-minute (or 24-hour) rule.
  • Be conscious.
  • Make needed fixes.
Is your message conveying the image that you want others to FOREVER see?

According to Brownell (http://www.prnewsonline.com/water-cooler/2015/03/25/4-things-you-need-to-kn...)

1. "Your digital footprint is everything."

2. "Your digital footprint is permanent."

3. "Your digital footprint only has meaning relative to other footprints."

4. "You yourself only make part of your digital footprint; the rest is made by others."

Hint: Connect

  • Put out your best stuff.
  • Tags make a difference.
  • Tweet or use other microblogging tools, blog, contribute to wikis, post videos.
  • Connect smartly.
  • Use smart, clear commenting.
Future employers do want to know about you in social media. They will look before they ask!

Look at this 9-year-old's efforts, and think about what "stuff" she is putting out there: http://mycharitywater.org/p/campaign?campaign_id=16396

A few underlying thoughts:

1. Be a humble but smart contributor.

2. Be constructive and clear in your commenting.

3. Don't take credit if it isn't yours...give credit always!

4. Use netiquette...and don't assume you know it...check and self-monitor.
