Characteristics of a Well-Managed Classroom

  • There is little wasted time, confusion, and disruption.
  • Classroom climate is work-oriented, but relaxed and pleasant.

Classroom Management All Year Long

  • Organization
  • Start class by giving an assignment, not by taking roll.
  • Post assignments in the same place everyday.
  • Present clear rules and provide reasonable explanations of their purpose.
  • Rules are most effective when there are consequences and rewards.

Classroom Procedures Every Teacher Must Teach

  • Procedure for dismissal
  • Procedure for absent students
  • Procedure for quieting a class
  • Procedure for beginning the day
  • Procedure for students seeking help

The Student Who is Absent

  • Teachers waste time collecting work for absent students
  • Have students take turns taking roll silently
  • Have the "roll-taker" mark who is absent and collect work for them
  • The absent work for each student may be placed in a folder
  • The absent student is responsible for collecting their folder upon return
