BRITISH-FRENCH RIVALRY

  • They attacked each other because they went on each other's land.
  • They did this to take control of North America.

NATIVE AMERICANS TAKE SIDES

  • The French only wanted to gain fur for fur trading.
  • The French married Native American women and followed their customs.
  • The French converted, or changed the Native American's religion.
  • The Native Americans fought the. British along side the French.

THE IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY

  • Most powerful Native American group
  • The Iroquois nation includes the following five nations
  • The Mohawk, the Seneca, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, and the Oneida.
  • They took over the Great Lakes by turning the French and British against each other.
  • The Iroquois became Britain's ally, after the British made the Iroquois move to the Ohio Valley.

AMERICAN cOLONISTS tAKE ACTION

  • Virginians wanted to settle the Ohio Valley.
  • In 1753 the governor sent George Washington to survey the land.
  • Washington was 21 years old.
  • He was going to tell the French to leave the native American's land.
  • They were determined to complete their design, or plan.

WASHINGTON'S FIRST COMMAND (pART 1)

  • He became a lieutenant colonel in the spring of 1754.
  • He was sent back to Ohio to take it over.
  • He was sent with a militia, or group of civilians who were trained to fight.
  • He was sent to build a fort at the site of present day Pittsburg.
  • The French had already taken that idea, however.

WASHINGTON'S FIRST COMMAND (PART 2)

  • Washington established a smaller fort.
  • Although outnumbered, Washington and his men attacked!
  • The French forced them to surrender.
  • The British soldiers were later released and returned to Virginia.
  • The colonists considered Washington a hero even though he lost.

THE ALBANY PLAN OF UNION (PART 2)

  • In 1754 representatives from several colonies met in Albany.
  • They wanted to find ways to defend themselves against the British.
  • They also wanted to convince the Iroquois to join the British.
  • The representatives adapted the Albany plan of Union.
  • The plan was created by Benjamin Franklin.
