Artificial Intelligence, Presentation Brilliance

A Closer Look at the Artificial Intelligence Behind Haiku Deck Zuru

You may have heard that Haiku Deck Zuru is the world’s first presentation creation tool powered by artificial intelligence. It is so unique and powerful that we have submitted a patent for the transformation of structured content into a presentation.

Haiku Deck Zuru from Haiku Deck on Vimeo.

So…what exactly does that mean?

Here’s a step-by-step walk-through of Zuru with our co-founder and CTO Kevin, who shows that artificial intelligence isn’t just a buzzword. In fact, Haiku Deck Zuru uses a number of different kinds of artificial intelligence (as well as massive amounts of proprietary data) in thoughtful ways to transform presentations from boring to brilliant.

Step 1: Parsing and Data Structuring

Types of artificial intelligence used: natural language processing

The presentation transformation process begins with an uploaded PowerPoint or Keynote file, or with an outline created in Evernote. (Our goal is to be able to input more file types soon.)

First, Haiku Deck Zuru’s parsing engine extracts the text, converting it from a binary file into structured data that can be analyzed (and, ultimately, transformed).

Zuru looks for and extracts any custom images, analyzing where the images are placed on each slide and assessing importance by calculating how much of the slide area each image takes up. If an important custom image is identified, Zuru centers and aligns it to make it fit well with the visual style of Haiku Deck.

At this stage, Zuru also uses natural language processing to strip words down to their most meaningful roots, remove duplicates, standardize text, and identify meaningful compound words (for example, “Space Needle” instead of “space” and “needle”). This processing stage is critical for identifying appropriate images later on.

Artificial intelligence for presentations: Haiku Deck Zuru

Next, Zuru looks at how the text is laid out, noting patterns such as list items, titles and subtitles, headers and sub headers, and so on. It analyzes the size and placement of text to intelligently identify footer text, and to zero in on which text is important and which is not.

Zuru also analyzes the text to evaluate at a high level how well it follows presentation best practices, and to identify presentations that will require more manual intervention. For example, are there too many bullets, or too many words in general?

Step 2: Keyword Analysis

Types of artificial intelligence used: machine learning

This is where the artificial intelligence behind Zuru gets really interesting, as Zuru uses the (anonymous) data it has gathered from the millions of presentations created by Haiku Deck users to suggest a beautiful, relevant image for each slide.

Using this giant data set (which had to be crunched for 36 hours using a linear regression model), Zuru looks at how frequently each possible keyword on a slide appears in presentations, vs. how frequently it has been used as an image search term and actually selected as an image result.

For example:

  • “Love” appears very frequently in presentations, but it’s not frequently used as the image search term. So when Zuru sees “love” on a slide, it is less likely to select that word for the image search.
  • “Dog” appears frequently, and is frequently chosen. So when Zuru sees “dog” on a slide, it is more likely to select that word for the image search.
  • “Space Needle” does not appear frequently, but is frequently chosen. So when Zuru sees “Space Needle” on a slide, it is very likely to select that phrase for the image search (and, if you remember from step 1, it’s smart enough to look for the iconic structure instead of pictures of stars or sewing).

Zuru also takes into consideration where a given keyword appears in the slide (for example, a word appearing in the header is likely more important than a word appearing in the 5th bullet), how frequently it appears on the slide, and how frequently a given word has appeared in other slides. All these calculations help determine the best term or terms to use for an image search.

Step 3: Image Selection

Next, Zuru does an image search for the most highly ranked keywords, returning hundreds of extremely high-quality, Creative Commons licensed images in a matter of milliseconds. Kevin has carefully designed this step to be able to handle massive amounts of image searches very quickly, in parallel, so that it feels instantaneous to the user.

Because of all the natural language process and normalization we’ve done already (see step 1), as well as our robust proprietary data set (see step 2), more than 90% of image search terms appear in our list of the 70,000 most popular image search terms, which allows Zuru to suggest standout images incredibly quickly and accurately.

The Data Behind Haiku Deck Zuru – Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Images that have been hand-curated by our team, or that have been selected frequently by Haiku Deck users, rise to the top — and, of course, Zuru will continue to get smarter with every new presentation created.

Step 4: Image Optimization

Types of artificial intelligence used: computer vision, K-means clustering

Once Zuru has identified the perfect image for a slide background, it converts the image into a Lab color space, a format closely mapped to the way that humans perceive light. Zuru uses a process called K-means clustering to analyze the color palette, removing the grayscales and zeroing in on the colors that appear most frequently in the image. Zuru pulls out the most prominent colors in the image and performs brightness analysis on them, comparing them against hundreds of professionally designed color palettes to select the ideal colors for the slide foreground and background.

Next, Zuru performs brightness analysis to determine the best placement of the text (top, middle, or bottom), and whether a text screen is needed for optimal readability and contrast.

Artificial intelligence for presentations: Haiku Deck Zuru

Finally, Zuru adjusts the zoom and placement of the image so that the slide background is perfectly centered.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

At this stage, Zuru analyzes the presentation content to determine the high-level category (for example, real estate, marketing, education) and select an appropriate font from our full library of themes.

Kevin’s goal with Zuru is to use data and artificial intelligence to get presentations 90% of the way there in a matter of minutes, and to make it very easy for the presentation creator to review and fine-tune the results.

In this final stage, Zuru will point out areas where trimming down text could improve the presentation, and also identify slides where it needs more input to select the correct keyword or image. The user can either make edits right in Zuru, or export back to .pptx format to edit directly in PowerPoint (which we didn’t even think was possible until very recently).

Sound complicated? Well, it is — which is one of the many reasons we love Kevin and his team. The good news is that although Zuru is complex behind the scenes, it’s incredibly important to all of us that the user experience is simple.

Want to give Zuru a try? Send us a PowerPoint or an outline at gallery@haikudeck.com. We’ll run it through Zuru and send it back to you to see what you think.

And if you’re already convinced (as I am), you can become a charter member and be one of the very first to try it.

Haiku Deck Zuru: Instant Presentation Creator

Introducing Haiku Deck Zuru

Beginning in late spring 2015, Haiku Deck Zuru users will be able to import an outline or existing presentation from PowerPoint, Keynote, or Evernote to instantly create a beautiful, visual Haiku Deck that’s perfectly optimized for any platform.

Haiku Deck Zuru technology intelligently analyzes presentation content and applies best practices to identify keywords, recommend images and fonts, and optimize slide layouts, quickly transforming rough presentations or notes into stunning visual presentations.

“When I think about the millions of people around the world who are spending 6, 8, 10 hours on every one of their PowerPoints — to be able to reduce that from 10 hours to 10 minutes is a big deal,” said Kevin Leneway, co-founder and CTO of Haiku Deck. “We can save people so much time. And we can prevent so many really awful presentations.”

“We can save people so much time. And we can prevent so many really awful presentations.” Kevin Leneway, Co-founder and CTO

Haiku Deck Zuru is made possible by the massive trove of data collected over the past 3 years, as Haiku Deck’s highly engaged global community has performed millions and millions of image searches to create more than 3 million presentations.

The Data Behind Haiku Deck Zuru – Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

By analyzing the frequency of image search terms and the images selected over time, Haiku Deck Zuru can intelligently predict the most important concept to be illustrated on each slide, suggest high-quality images, and accurately place text and layout for optimal readability. Haiku Deck Zuru users can easily make edits and refinements in the Haiku Deck iPad App or Web App, which will remain free, or save their presentation as an editable .pptx file.

“Our goal at Haiku Deck has always been to make it 10 times easier for professionals to create decks that are 10 times more effective, in 1/10th the time,” said Adam Tratt, co-founder and CEO of Haiku Deck. “With these new developments and the technology behind Haiku Deck Zuru, we are really delivering on the vision.”

Editing

For each template, we’ve blocked out suggested slides to give your Haiku Deck structure, but we’ve also made it really easy to add, copy, delete, or rearrange your slides. We’ve also made sure that changing the layouts and formatting your slides will remain simple.

And if you’re more of a visual learner, we’ve created a helpful video that teaches you how to arrange your text, change the font and text color, and more, here.

Selecting a Theme

We’ve selected a theme to match the mood of that specific deck, but you can choose any theme you’d like to use. Learn more about selecting themes here.

If you’d like to see a preview, and samples, of all 20 themes, check out A Field Guide to Haiku Deck’s Free Themes.

Using Images

You are free to use the images that we’ve selected, but of course you can also search for other free Creative Commons images or import your own images.

If the deck uses a logo slide, you’ll want to add your own logo to the cover slide, and use your own brand colors. You can learn more about these two features here.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve finished editing and the deck, you’re probably going to want to share your deck. We recommend doing this straight from Edit Mode so that you can put these finishing touches to your deck:

  • Retitle the deck to reflect your changes.
  • These decks will be PUBLIC by default. If you do not wish for your deck to be public, make sure you update your privacy settings.
  • Update the deck’s description. You can do this by clicking on the Settings gear at the top right corner in the editor (in the web app), or by tapping the Share button (on the iPad app).
  • Select a category for your deck.
  • Choose whether or not you would like others to be able to copy your deck, just like you did with the template. Learn more about that here.

Showcase Your Brand Identity Beautifully with New Logo Slides and Custom Colors

As more and more Haiku Deck users work with the app for selling products or representing their company’s vision, the need for slides to showcase a company’s brand identity with logos and custom background colors has become a top request.

Beginning today, iPad users can update Haiku Deck to version 3.3, and web app users can sign in to haikudeck.com, to give these awesome new features a try. Here’s how they work:

Creating a Logo Slide

Select the orange Text button on the left, then the Logo Slide type that now appears at the bottom of the “SELECT FORMAT” options.

haiku deck logo slide

Once you’ve selected the Logo Slide type, tap on the camera icon in the white circle on the slide to upload your image or logo. After importing your logo, enter your text and tap on the blue Image icon to search for a Creative Commons image, import your own photo, or use a solid color for your slide’s background.

Tip: For the best results, the optimal size for logo images in Haiku Deck is 600 x 600 pixels. If you find that the automatic zoom is cropping your image, we recommend resizing your image with free apps such as Canva to place your logo on a larger canvas, or PicMonkey’s collage feature to increase the amount of white space around your logo.

Selecting Custom Colors and Theme Colors

To select your background color, choose the blue background tab and then the solid color icon as shown below. Toggle “SOLID BACKGROUND” to ON. This gives you the ability to choose a preset background color or create a custom color to fit your brand exactly.

Custom Colors

When you tap on the eyedropper icon, you can customize the color of your slide background. Simply tap, or press, hold and move the small circle located on the color wheel to select a color. Pressing and holding the circle located on the square within the color wheel will adjust the color’s saturation and hue.

Tip: If you have the hex code for a color you’d like to use on your slide, tap on the hex code above the color wheel and type in the code.

Theme Colors and Haiku Deck Favorites

You’ll notice a few new options when you turn on solid background colors for a slide. Tapping on the color palette icon will provide you with a pre-selected group of colors specifically tailored to the current theme you have selected, as well as our Haiku Deck Favorites you’re already familiar with. Simply tap to select your desired color.

4. Presenting a Deck

Using your iPhone as a remote with your iPad

If you are signed into the Haiku Deck app on your iPad and your iPhone, you can use your iPhone to control playback of any published decks on your iPad! Just make sure both devices are connected to the same wifi network or have bluetooth turned on, and that the deck you want to play is published (if it is, it will be visible on your iPhone), then tap the remote button in the top right corner of the iPhone app.

Remote button - iPhone app

The remote button in the top right allows you to control your iPad from your iPhone.

As long as you’re signed into the same account on both devices, you’ll be able to select your iPad from the menu that pops up. A pop up will appear in Haiku Deck on your iPad, so that you can accept or decline the connection. Then, just play any of your decks from your iPhone – and watch the magic happen!

Presenting to an AppleTV with Airplay

If you have an AppleTV on the same network as your iPhone, you can stream your deck wirelessly to play on the TV with Airplay, just like you can with the iPad. Simply swipe up from the bottom of your screen, and tap the Airplay button in the bottom right. Choose AppleTV in the menu that pops up, and viola! Click here for more info about streaming to an AppleTV.

Connecting to a Projector

You can also present while connected to a projector like you can with the iPad. Just find the appropriate adapter for your iOS device and projector, connect it to the projector, and play your deck. You can rotate your iPhone vertically to see your notes. If you run into any trouble, swipe upward from the bottom of your screen to check your orientation lock and mirroring settings in control center, or check out this article.

5. Troubleshooting

Missing decks on your iPhone?

You can tap the three horizontal lines in the top left corner of the iPhone app and choose IMPORT to prompt the app to check for any recently published decks. If it still doesn’t show up, make sure that it’s been published to the same account from the web or your iPad.

I can’t connect my iPhone as a remote.

Make sure that:

  • Your iPhone and iPad are on the same wifi network, or that they both have bluetooth enabled.
  • You have the latest version of Haiku Deck installed on both devices, by going to the App Store, and checking under the Updates tab.
  • The account you’re signed into on your iPad and iPhone is the same. If you haven’t signed out/back in on either recently, you may want to sign out and sign back in just to make sure you’re in the same account.
  • Your iPhone and iPad are both up to date. To check this, you can go to the Settings app, and choose General – Software Update.
  • If you’re on a public network, such as one in a hotel or conference hall, that you don’t have to agree to any terms and conditions in a web browser before utilizing the connection. To check this easily, just try to go to a website like haikudeck.com in your browser on both devices.

If you’re still stuck:

  • Swipe upward from the bottom of the screen, and turn on Airplane Mode on both devices. Then, turn it back off, make sure you’re connected to wifi and/or bluetooth, and try again.
  • Follow the steps in this article on both devices.
  • Drop us a line so we can help out!

I can’t start a new deck.

The ability to create decks on the iPhone is something we’re working on. It’s coming soon, but for the time being, you’ll want to download our free iPad app, or head to haikudeck.com to use our Web App beta.

The app isn’t acting as expected.

Follow the steps in this article and if that doesn’t help, drop us a line for speedy, personalized assistance!
