Presentation Inspiration: The Best Haiku Decks of 2012

As we wrap up 2012, we wanted to acknowledge the amazing enthusiasm, support, and creativity of our community. (Wow! Thank you!) The best part of our day is browsing all the newly published Haiku Decks, and we love every one in its own way. Here are a few standouts that particularly knocked our socks off. We could have picked dozens, or even hundreds, for your own presentation inspiration, but we’re keeping it to 12–one for each month in the year, one for each Top Pot doughnut in a dozen (a key component of our own creative fuel), one for each syllable in a haiku. We hope these Haiku Decks of the Year, hand-picked by our team, will inspire you as much as they’ve inspired us.

We’re huge Seth Godin fans, and we were thrilled when he embedded a Haiku Deck to complement his awesome “Most People” post. “Most people don’t care enough to make a difference….Fortunately, you’re not most people, and neither are your best customers.” (Exactly!) Read the short, sweet, gemlike post and check out the most-viewed Haiku Deck of all time here.

Things I Want To Punch in the Face: A Haiku Deck Contest!

No, we don’t want to punch you in the face. In fact, we like you quite a bit. But trust us, this is awesome.

When Jennifer Worick–author, consultant, public speaker, and friend of Haiku Deck–launched her book Things I Want to Punch in the Face, a hilarious and wickedly satisfying collection of all things obnoxious, we knew a collaboration was in order. We collected our favorite rants into a Haiku Deck, which received more views than the book’s trailer (more than 6,400 in 4 months!) and headlined our Popular Gallery for quite a while.

“People flipped out when they saw the TIWTPITF Haiku Deck. With great images and text, the Haiku Deck is a really powerful way to convey a message in a glance. The TIWTPITF Haiku Deck distilled my book down to its cheeky essence!” Jennifer Worick, author of Things I Want to Punch in the Face

Now Jennifer has responded with a list of seasonal holiday-inspired things she’d like to punch, from themed Christmas trees to Scrooge-y misers.

What’s more, she’s hosting a contest on her blog for a chance to win a free signed copy of the book. To enter, create your own “Things I Want to Punch in the Face” Haiku Deck and email it to jen@jenniferworick.com with your name and contact info before December 21st. Jennifer will pick the winner and announce it on her blog (which is highly entertaining, by the way). Meanwhile, we’ll be collecting all the entries on Pinterest for you to browse and enjoy.

Blog Inspiration: Guest Q&A with Megan Hunt

We’re delighted to announce our newest Haiku Deck Guru: entrepreneur, blogger, and all-around creative force Megan Hunt, a.k.a. Princess Lasertron. Megan’s high-style Haiku Decks have been wowing us for weeks, and we finally had a chance to hear more about how she’s using the app–and how it provided blog inspiration for Radvent, her latest creative undertaking.

Q&A with Megan Hunt

Haiku Deck: So, what inspired you to start using Haiku Deck?

Megan: I found out about Haiku Deck when I saw a business use it to pitch during a local Startup Weekend competition. I’m always super interested in trying new apps that seem like they’d make my life a little easier (particularly in the context of entrepreneurship). I thought Haiku Deck had a cute name and seemed promising, so I downloaded it and was immediately hooked. For me, the sparseness of the app makes it as fun to play with as it is useful. It honestly reminds me of the hours spent toying with HyperStudio as a kid. Really. It’s just fun.

The Gift of Haiku Deck

You don’t need a promo code to give the gift of Haiku Deck, or even your wallet, for that matter. For one thing, 50% off of free is still free (no tax, no shipping, no minimum purchase, no nonsense).

But more to the point, what’s magical about the holidays to us isn’t another cyberspecial or a doorbuster sale. It’s connecting and reflecting. It’s sharing beautiful stories and memories.

So here’s a thought. Put your credit card away and curl up in a cozy spot with a hot chocolate or a hot toddy. You’ll need your iPad, of course, and a little Peggy Lee in the background never hurt anybody. In just a few minutes you can create a unique, beautiful gift from your heart for someone you care about.

Need a little inspiration?
Tell someone you appreciate them.
Tell someone you care about them.
Tell someone you miss them.
Capture a few favorite memories you shared in 2012.

And, because it’s how we do just about everything, here’s some inspiration in Haiku Deck form:

You see, when you give the gift of Haiku Deck, you’re incredibly likely to make someone special smile, laugh, and remember what really matters. And, like most of the best things in life (snowflakes and hugs, just for starters), it is free.

All the best to you and yours,
Team Haiku Deck

Give Thanks with Haiku Deck

Amid the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, our potential tumble down the infamous fiscal cliff, and the not so sweet bankruptcy of Hostess Brands, there is plenty to feel down and out about. But we here at Haiku Deck believe it is important to always count the good things and remember what we are all thankful for, be it firefighters, family, or football. Create a Haiku Deck dedicated to all the things you give thanks for, click through to the web view to add personal notes, and share it with those you love most! Here’s one to get you started:

And what are we most thankful for, you ask? Our fans, of course!

Are You a Haiku Deck Guru?

We’ve seen some amazing advocacy and evangelism around Haiku Deck, with fans sending us haikus, blogging about the app, innovating with it, using it to give presentations at conferences, and spreading the word through Twitter chats and events. We decided to make it official by inviting select superusers to become Haiku Deck Gurus.

Meet the Haiku Deck Gurus

We currently have about 25 gurus, representing seven countries and three continents, and they are an amazing, inspiring, diverse bunch!

Haiku Deck Gurus: Areas of Expertise

Decks by our Gurus appear frequently in our Featured and Popular Galleries–Visual Storytelling by photographer and educator Ken Shelton, for example, has been enjoyed by more than 11,000 viewers. School counselor Susan Spellman Cann is one of our most prolific creators, bringing her uplifting messages to deck after beautiful deck. Blogger Wendy Townley created a series of gorgeous Haiku Decks to recap her experience at the Alt Design Summit. Simon McKenzie’s manifesto, the New Mindset, has struck a chord with educators worldwide and is one of the most frequently shared Haiku Decks. Creative marketer Nick Armstrong offers up his own Haiku Deck manifesto, WTF Marketing, on his site.

To date we’ve featured guest Q&As with education Guru Jeremy Macdonald, blogger and entrepreneur Megan Hunt, and realtor John James on our blog. You can also follow our Gurus on Twitter, see more examples of their work on Pinterest, and hang out with them on Google+, where new Guru and new media expert Mark Traphagen is helping us build awareness.

Haiku Deck Reviews…of Haiku Deck

We always love hearing what you have to say about Haiku Deck, whether it’s in the form of a Fast Company story, a blog post, a video, a tweet, or a haiku. Here are a couple of reviews that were actually created with Haiku Deck. Yes, it’s a little meta, but let’s just roll with it.

Love Notes (with Three Bonus Fan Haikus)

Our official sources tell us it’s love note day. Of course you already know how we feel about you, but it seems like the perfect opportunity to share some of the warm and fuzzy Haiku Deck love that’s been pouring in. Behold, three exquisite fan haikus about Haiku Deck, that we’ve taken the liberty of making into exquisitely illustrated Haiku Decks. Wait, what? We need more coffee…

Feel inspired to use Haiku Deck to write a love note (to someone special, to your fans, to a brand, to a sports team, to the world)? Let us know in the comments!

And, above all else, thanks again for all the love.

A Love Letter to Our Fans

It turns out Love Note Day is sometime next week (who decides these things, anyway?) but we just can’t wait that long. We need to shower our fans with some love right now.

Last Friday afternoon, we released a new version of Haiku Deck, and poof! All the glowing comments and 4&5-star reviews pretty much vanished into thin air. Suddenly, all we had showing was a couple of spammy reviews claiming that Haiku Deck was a complete waste of $$ (umm, it’s free). Meanwhile, this awesome write-up of Haiku Deck in Fast Company Design was sending tons of people to iTunes to check us out, and it just didn’t look good.

We put the word out, and wow, did our community deliver. Fans–even very new fans–took the time to click through to iTunes and add their comments. We got our 4-star average back in a matter of hours. On the weekend!

To each of you who helped us out, thank you. And really, to every single one of our fans, thank you for being so crazy amazing, every single day. Thank you for tweeting to us, writing to us, writing about us, telling your friends about us, and sharing your ideas. Thank you for every single Haiku Deck you have published. We are doing our best to keep up with it all, but just in case we missed you, thank you. This one’s for you:
