Introducing Haiku Deck 4.0!

With mobile usage beginning to outpace desktop usage as a global trend, we’ve been getting more and more requests for improvements to Haiku Deck for iPhone. Today we’re proud to announce the all new Haiku Deck 4.0- the first truly-native iPhone presentation app. Whether you’re prepping for a client meeting on the road, struck by inspiration in a cafe, or just making a quick update to the big presentation that starts in a few minutes, Haiku Deck 4.0 for iPhone lets you:

Best of all, Haiku Deck 4.0 is FREE to download from iTunes today

Mobile-First iPhone Presentations

We like to think of Haiku Deck 4.0 as the first (and only) app designed to be mobile-first. We’ve got mobile in our DNA, so rather than cram a desktop app into a phone, we’ve made things easier for iPhone presentation creators by reducing the amount of tiny-keyboard tapping. For example, Haiku Deck for iPhone integrates Voice-to-Text technology and automatically delivers image search tags from the content you enter when creating slides. By limiting the number of words on each slide, Haiku Deck for iPhone helps you create presentations that looks great on any size screen- from a 3″ phone screen to the Jumbotron at your next big conference.

Want to learn more about the app? We’ve got special section of our user guide that explains everything you need to know about creating, editing, and sharing iPhone presentations. We’ve also got a cool video to show how it works.

Just in case you missed our last update, Haiku Deck web app now includes a handful of handy new updates like the ability to search for and embed YouTube videos (more) and auto-playback & looping presentations (more). If you’re an iPad Pro user, 4.0 supports slide-over and split view for multi-tasking (more).

Like what you see in 4.0? We would appreciate your review on iTunes. Find things that we should improve? Please drop us a line. We’re thrilled to bring Haiku Deck to hundreds of millions of iPhone users, so if you like what we’ve built and know an aspiring iPhone presentation creator, please help us spread the word!

New Presentation Page Navigation, Looping Presentation Control, and Video Playback

We’re proud to announce our new playback page today with tons of great new features to make Haiku Deck better than ever. Here’s the run down:

New YouTube Video Playback

Deck creators can now embed YouTube videos directly into their decks. To learn how to include videos in your presentation, click here. If you’re viewing a presentation with  a YouTube embed, you’ll notice a play button in the bottom right of the slide. Click to play the YouTube video from within the presentation!

New Loop and Auto Playback Settingsnew playback controlsWant to set your presentation to automatically advance or loop? This is a feature request we hear frequently from customers who want Haiku Decks to automatically play at a trade show booth, on a lobby monitor, or even at a Pecha Kucha event. Click the gear icon on the playback page to access these controls.

New Slide Navigation Controls

You may noticed that we’ve moved the slide controls to a more convenient location. To advance slides (or go backwards) look for the arrow buttons shown here. Keyboard arrow controls will also advance slides (left arrow to go forward, right arrow to go back).

New Notes Appear on Mobile

As more and more presentation viewers open Haiku Decks on small screens, it has become more important to show public notes in that context. The new playback page does just that as shown below.

Other new elements of the playback page include a better layout for mobile browsers, and significantly faster page load time.

We’d love to hear your feedback! Let us know what you think about the updated playback page by dropping us an email any time!

Add Video to Haiku Deck

We’re pleased to now offer video as a feature for Haiku Deck Pro subscribers. This lets users embed any YouTube video into their presentations for playback online.

Here’s how it works…

First sign in and click the new video button shown in the illustration below. If you’re not a Haiku Deck Pro subscriber, you will be prompted to upgrade.  From here you will have two options. The first option is to paste the link to your YouTube video directly in the white box. The second option is to click the ‘search for videos’ button.  (more on that below)

Add video (editor)

Note that below the box where you can enter your link, you can choose to use the video thumbnail as a background image for your slide. If you wish to use another image for the background of this slide, you can do so by clicking the blue image button in the left-side navigation of the editor (above the purple video button).

If you wish to use our video search, click the ‘search for videos’ button.

And then enter your video search term to find the perfect video right from within the app!

When added to your Haiku Deck, custom logos appear in 3 places:

  1. At the top of the Haiku Deck Player on the Web
  2. On the final slide during iPad app playback.
  3. On .pdf print-outs created during Haiku Deck .pdf export

Users may also set a web address to make their logo a clickable link to their web site when viewed on the web.

To add your custom logo, start by clicking on the shield icon in the top of the Haiku Deck editor.

To access this functionality, tap the share button in the Haiku Deck Editor. Then look for the Google Classroom button shown in the illustration below:

Share to Google Classroom is also available on the web playback page shown below. This allows you to share decks directly to Google Classroom. This new option and all standard sharing features remain part of Haiku Deck Basic, our free offering. Find it when you share a deck from the Haiku Deck editor and on the Haiku Deck playback page. Make sure you click the share button to expand the sharing options on the playback page, shown in the illustration below. Then find the Google Classroom icon along with other share options that are revealed.

Easiest PowerPoint Ever! New Editable Export in Haiku Deck Pro

New and old Haiku Deck users rejoice! We’ve added an much-requested new feature that lets Haiku Deck Pro subscribers download editable .pptx files! This means you can create your Haiku Deck, download it, open it in Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, or Google Slides and edit the words on the slide. If you like to add slides in one of these other apps, this is a huge new convenience that is sure to help users who go back and forth between our app and others. To access this feature, click the export icon in the app (highlighted in pink below).

export

Why might you want to export to PowerPoint? Lets say you have some slides that you want to incorporate into your existing presentation and you want to add beautiful visual slides to go with them. Now when you export Haiku Deck slides to merge with your other presentation, you can easily make changes without having to return to Haiku Deck.

What if you love our Haiku Deck presentation, but you want to swap out one of the Haiku Deck fonts with your own custom font? Editable export enables this too.

Screen Shot 2015-08-17 at 5.39.57 PM

To make this work, we’re using open-source fonts that may require installation on your machine. When you download, you’ll notice the instructions and links to install the fonts relevant to your deck. If you want to get a jump on this, here they are all in one place:

Please follow the instructions below to ensure the best results:

  1. Download the font zip file by clicking this link
Double-click on the zip file to unzip
  2. Find the uncompressed zip file in your download folder and double-click each of the 27 fonts. Follow the prompts to install each font.
  3. If you have PowerPoint open already, completely quit out of PowerPoint by choosing File/Quit
  4. Reopen PowerPoint to revel in the beauty of your downloaded Haiku Deck

An additional word about fonts…In order for the deck to look right when you open it, the fonts need to be installed on the local machine where the deck is opened. If the fonts aren’t installed on the local machine where the deck is opened, then PowerPoint or Keynote will guess which fonts to use instead of the intended fonts.

Once these fonts are installed, you don’t have to do it again for that machine. If you share the deck with a colleague or friend using a different machine, they *will* have to install the fonts on their machine. One alternative is to share a .pdf which will not be editable, but *will* maintain the look and feel of the deck without additional font installing.
