EVOLUTION

MADE BY: PEYTON PRUETT Pd. 1

TOXIN ADAPTATION

  • This is an adaptation that an animal has evolved with to protect themselves from predators.
  • An example of this adaptation is the stripped skunk.
  • They can be found in North America.

MIMICRY ADAPTATION

  • It is a similarity to one species that protects it from predators.
  • An example of this is the stick bug
  • The stick bug can be found mainly in forests and grasslands.

CAMOUFLAGE ADAPTATION

  • This an adpatation that allows animals to blend in with certain aspects of their enviorment.
  • An example of this is the white snow owl.
  • They are found mainly in North America.

STABALIZING SELECTION

  • Operates to eliminate extreme expressions of a trait when the average expression leads to higher fitness.
  • An example of this is in human babies

DIRECTIONAL SELECTION

  • A mode of natural selction in which one phenotype is favored in extreme over other phenotypes.
  • An example of this is how short-neck giraffes died off, and long-neck giraffes survived because the long-neck giraffes had a more favorable trait.

DISRUPTIVE SELECTION

  • The process that plits a population into two groups.
  • An example of this is when a normal white moth splits into two groups, the grey and black moths because they blend in better with the enviorment.

SEXUAL SELECTION

  • Operates in populations where males and females differ significantly in apperance.
  • An example of this is in bull frogs.

DIVERGENT EVOLUTION

  • The accumulation of differences between groups which can lead to the formation of new species.
  • An example of this is with humans, horses, cats, birds and whales.

CONVERGENT EVOLUTION

  • The process of whereby organisims not closly related independently evolve similar traits as a result of having to adapt to similar enviroments.
  • An example of this is with sharks and dolphines.

COEVOLUTION

  • When one species evolves to fit the evolution of another species.
  • Example is a
  • Zinnina flower and a butterfly.
