Childhood

  • Born Gaius Octavius into an old and wealthy branch of the  Octavii family
  • Mother, Atia, was Julius Caesar's neice and his father was Gov. of Macedoni
  • Atia remarried a former Gov. of Syria  
  • Octavius was raised by his grandmother (Julius Caesar's sister), Julia Caesaris.

JULIUS cAESAR

  • When Octavius was older he wanted to join his uncle in Hispania
  • On his way he was shipwreck
  • He made it to shore and crossed hostile territory to get to the camp
  • Impressed his Great-Uncle so much he named him his sucsessor

THe Name

  • At birth he was named Gaius Octavius after his biological father
  • Caesar's name and become Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus
  • Divi Filius (Son of the Divine), becoming Gaius Julius Caesar Divi Filius.
  •  Imperator Caesar Divi Filius 38 BC
  • 27BC Roman Senate voted new titles for him,  Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus.

rise to the throne

  • He formed a strategic alliance with Marc Antony, a successful and ambitious general.
  • They defeated their enemies in Rome and chased the survivors to Greece
  • In Greece they finished them off in two battles
  • After they won, Augustus took Rome and Anthony took Egypt 

Marc ANthony and CLeopatra

  • When Anthony went to Egypt, he fell in love with its beautiful queen
  • Cleopatra was part of a Greek family that ruled Egypt after Alex. the Great
  • She wanted the throne for herself and Anthony was going to help her
  • Before Anthony and Cleopatra could strike Rome, Augustus attacked.
  • The Battle of Actium31 BC destroyed three-quarters of the Egyptian fleet.

"two Caesars are one too many"

  • Anthony and Cleopatra killed themselves
  • Egypt became part of the Roman Empire
  • Ordered Caesarion (Julius Caesar's son by Cleopatra) to be killed
  • Spared Cleopatra's children by Antony
  • Killed Antony's older son

leadership Style

  •  Rome’s first Emperor, promising to restore peace and security. 
  • Augustus charmed Senate and people by pretending to give up power.
  • People begged the Senate to vote him absolute ruler 
  • Humbly agreed in order to keep the People's support
  • Wanted to create a dynasty

Personal Life

  • He divorced his wife and married his pregnant mistress, Livia.
  • His morals clashed with the public promiscuity of his daughter, Julia. 
  • He was eventually forced to banish her.
  • He died in 14 AD and the senate declared him a god.
  • With his two grandsons dead, power passed to his stepson, Tiberius.

LEgacy

  • After his death, the empire cover  Europe, north Africa and the Middle East
  • Augustus had ended 100 years of civil war
  • He achieved over 40 years of internal peace and prosperity
  • He established a dynasty 
  • Augustus Caesar was so badass a month was named after him
