PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT ARE THE PRECEPTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

  • Precepts are the minimal requirements of the Chruch
  • By living by them, you are living the minimal form of spiritual life.
  • Not obeying them is considered a mortal sin.
  • Some precepts are not very difficult to abide by.
  • It is still highly recommended that you go beyond what these precepts require.

THE FIRST PRECEPT

  • "You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation"
  • There are exceptions to this rule.
  • For example if you are away from a church on Sunday or are ill, then you are excused.

THE SECOND PRECEPT

  • "You shall confess your sins at least once a year"

THE THIRD PRECEPT

  • "You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least once during the Easter season.

THE FOURTH PRECEPT

  • "You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.
  • If you are a pregnant or nursing woman and you have a strict diet, you do not need to observe fasting or abstinence.

THE FIFTH PRECEPT

  • "You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.

FASTING

  • Fasting is reducing the amount of food you eat below normal levels.
  • On fasting days you are allowed two small meals and one main meal.
  • Snacking is prohibited.
  • All Catholics from 18-59 years old are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

ABSTINENCE

  • Abstinence means not eating meat.
  • Fish is not considered meat in this case.
  • All Catholics are required to observe abstinence on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.
  • Outside of the U.S. it is required to observe abstinence on all Fridays of the year in honor of Good Friday.

GO BEYOND.

  • It is highly recommended that you do more than is required by the Precepts.
