PAN AFRICANISM

-An Ideology
-The belief that all Africans, those in the country of Africa, and those in
diaspora were united, and shared the same fate.

Diaspora
Diaspora means Jews that lived out of Israel, but it was also Africans that lived outside of the country, they could still feel united.

THE START

  • African Association founded in London, 1897
  • Created by Henry Sylvester Williams
  • African Association led to the start of Pan Africanism
  • First congress was held in London, 1900

-The men at the congress wanted to unite all of African diaspora and to gain political, economical, and social rights for African people.

Effects
-Gave Africans hope
-A means of revival for nations that were once under control of other powers.
- Africa would be able to compete with other global powers.

  • Malcolm X
  • Nelson Mandella

Malcolm X
-Imprisoned for breaking and entering
-Started to read books while in prison, and became educated
-Got involved in Pan Africanism
-Became a great speaker
-Assassinated on February 21, 1965

W.E.B. DuBois
- Active Pan-Africanist
-Attended the first congress in London
-Elected Vice President
-Created 'Niagara Movement' which involved a section for pan-
africanism
-In his lifetime started many movements for pan- Africanism
-died August 27th, 1963

Pan Africanism Today
Pan Africanism is still alive today, though in the U.S. It is no longer a fight for rights and equality. In the country of Africa it remains a means of hope, and unity for countries that still seek proper educational systems, equality among peoples and countries that are still at war.
