WHAT IS TENDONITIS?

The painful inflammation of a tendon as well as the tendon-muscle attachment to a bone. Commonly found in the shoulder, hip, heel and hamstrings. Most common in adults over 40 because as tendons age they become less elastic and less able to handle stress.

CAUSES OF TENDONITIS

  • Repetitive, minor impact on the affected area
  • Sudden serious injury
  • Sports related activities due to injury to the muscle tendon or tendon to bone
  • Musculoskeletal disorders may also cause tendonitis

S/S OF TENDONITIS

S/S include pain at the joint or muscle attachment that results in limited range of motion (ROM) of the affected area.

PREVENTION

  • Take it slow & gradually build up you activity level
  • Use limited force & limit repititions

TREATMENT

  • Initially use ice for first 12-24 hours to minimize inflammation
  • After initial phase apply heat to help with joint and muscle pain
  • If calcium deposits are confimed by x ray use ice instead of heat
  • Rest the affected area
  • Take oral analgesics to help control pain
