ALGONQUIN

WHERE DID THEY COME FROM

  • They lived by the banks of the Ottawa river
  • Unfortunately the iroquois drove them away from their home
  • Agonguin now live in southern ontario and parts of Quebec

TRAVEL AND HUNTING

  • In the summer they would travel by canoe
  • In the winter months they used sleds for travel
  • The Algonquin hunted game and collected edible plants
  • They used these techniques all year round

WERE THEY NOMADIC?

  • The Algonquin were semi nomadic people
  • This means they would fallow the game in their territory
  • Algonquin would move their settlements around the area where they hunted
  • They also followed to where the best fishing and berry picking spots

ALGONQUIN BELIEFS

  • They believed in a great spirit
  • It's name was kitichie manitou
  • This spirit was in living and no living things
  • They believed only shaman could speak to him
  • This spirit was the life force of everything

ALGONQUIN LANGAUGE

  • The Algonquin still speak their original language
  • OR SPECIFICALLY "OMAMIWIMININIMOWIN."
  • It is similar to the nipissing groups language

ALGONQUIN HERITAGE TODAY

  • We celebrate their heritage every year
  • To do this we reenact when the chiefs met Samuel de Champlain
  • Both native peoples and European people attend this event

BACK ROUND KNOWLEDGE

  • Algonquins were the first to befriend the French
  • The Algonquin name of origin was anishinabeg
  • This means human beings or more specifically real people
  • The Algonquin had a big part in helping with the founding of Quebec City
