A simple guide to making cider.

HOW TO MAKE...CIDER

PICK APPLES WHEN RIPE

IF FALLEN, WILL REQUIRE WASHING

AFTER SCRATTING, LEAVE PULP FOR 24HRS

PRESS TO EXTRACT JUICE AND PUMP THROUGH MUSLIN

INTO CLEAN CONTAINERS

CHECK FERMENTATION - THAT SHOULD BEGIN WITHIN FIVE DAYS.

IF NOT THE ADDITION OF YEAST MAY BE NECESSARY.

YOU MUST TEST WITH A HYDROMETER BEFORE BOTTLING

TO MEASURE ALCOHOL CONTENT AND ENSURE FERMENTATION

TASTE YOUR CIDER FOR SWEETNESS/DRYNESS FROM JANUARY ONWARDS

GOLDEN RULES:

  • Use clean fruit
  • Sterilise containers and equipment then rinse well
  • Use air locks or damp hessian cloth to keep out the dreaded vinegar fly
  • Never bottle if still fermenting
  • Next year's cider will always taste better!!!
