The protests started when President Viktor Yanukovych's government announced it is abandoning an agreement to strengthen ties with the European Union and is instead seeking closer cooperation with Moscow.
President Viktor Yanukovych was the president of Ukraine, but he recently fled after the capital was taken over by protestors. He fled to Russia, but still claims to be the leader of Ukraine.
