THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

MOUTH

  • The first part of the digestive system is the mouth
  • The mouth breaks down food into smaller peices
  • Ingestion

ESOPHAGUS

  • After the food is chewed and swallowed, it goes down the esophagus
  • The esophagus transports the food to the stomach

STOMACH

  • The stomach acts like a container to start the digestion and pump food into the intestines
  • The food is mixed with with stomach acids and enzymes to break food down into smaller peices
  • The food then travels to the small intestines

SMALL INTESTINES

  • It connects to the stomach on the top
  • Most of the food is digested and absorbed

LIVER

  • Helps digestion by producing chemicals that break down food
  • Large, triangular organ

LARGE INTESTINES

  • Water is absorbed
  • Helps get rid of the waste

RECTUM

  • Final portion of the large intestines

ANUS

  • Allows the waste to exit the body
