RELIGION/BELIEFS

  • Most of the population is Muslim- follow Islam religion
  • Key points to their beliefs ...
  • They pray to Allah (the one God) and his prophet Muhammed
  • They pray facing the city 5 times a day; end life goal=paradise
  • They have free will and their object in life is to please Allah

FASHION

  • Women: taqiyah- which is a hat that goes with the dress they wear with them
  • Men: traditional boubou- which is a shirt that goes down to their thighs and have matching pants

LITERATURE

  • North African writers write in Arabic and French
  • Women tend to write in poetry to express deeper feelings
  • Because of the North African extensive historical backgrounds,
  • that tends to be a center piece in a lot of writing (like historical fiction)
  • Social ills and problems are also written about

MUSIC

  • Music is very unique
  • Not only do singers sing
  • Farmers sing while they are working about their experiences
  • and their lives. They sing to get through the day
  • The music belongs to everyone, not the singer (dancing is included)

ART

  • Combines African history and modern
  • Lots of sculptors and paintings
  • Painters show young people with politics
  • But traditional african elements are still seen
  • Drums are used a lot

EDUCATION

  • Along with the Middle East, North Africa is trying to improve education
  • There are many students who can't afford lots of schooling
  • In addition, there is not much school government funding
  • Many students never finish school
  • However, they keep trying to improve it but aren't doing so yet

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SCHOOL

  • Early morning chores and travel to far away schools
  • At school they learn arithmetic, reading, writing, and different languages
  • Soccer is a big played sport
  • Chores, homework, and play in the afternoon

DIVERISTY

  • The main minority group is an indigenous group called the Berber
  • Men are considered superior, and given higher educated jobs
  • Mothers stay at home and do house work
  • There is a big inequality
