Rules and Procedures

Students need access to your School Network

Define PCD – Personal Communication Devices

Define when they are allowed to use the Personal Communication Devices, what are they allowed to use it for, and what are the consequences for misuse of the devices?

Layers of Authority – District Policy, School Administration, and Teacher

When writing the policy make the student the sole responsible party of what they access within that device.

Teaching Digital Citizenship

You can access our Demo Online Digital Citizenship Course through PDCMS.ACADEMYLION.COM

Texting and Driving

Is it our responsibility - to some degree yes it is.

Digital Citizenship is not something that gets taught at home, it should be taught everywhere.

The title within itself states Citizen. Not Digital Citizen in school but in all aspects.

We can joke about this amazing political cartoon by Jeff Parker - but no one is laughing when you hear about teens dieing.

Becoming responsible digital citizens does not just deal with texting but with social media as well.

Social Media

Social Media is everywhere and can impact our students greatly.

Positive and Negative Impact - Digital Citizenship and Digital Footprint.

EVOLVING

This is not a battle. Cell Phones have taken a key role in the way that we communicate in the 21st century. We should not be battling with how to use technology and control it but rather evolving and finding ways to infuse this tool into our daily teachings.

We evolve by coming up with strategic ways to use texting in the classroom.

Scales of Agreement

How would you describe your perspective on this topic?
Strategy #1: Scales of Agreement : Students are often reluctant to share their opinions and perspectives in classroom discussion. By having students vote on a poll with their cell phones, as the results roll in they receive visual confirmation that their opinions are shared by others in the class.
The “Scales of Agreement” strategy works well in the classroom as a method to open up a classroom debate or to close a lesson. Instead of having students respond to a question that has a correct answer, create the following question:

Question: How would you describe your perspective on this concept/topic/issue?
A: Completely Agree
B: Somewhat Agree
C: Somewhat Disagree
D: Completely Disagree

Exit Tickets

Exit Tickets can be one of the easist way to transition to mobile devices in the classroom.

One should be checking for understanding through out the lesson, but challenge the students before they leave with a strong exit ticket.

They are going to have their phones out the second that they walk out of your room so why not have them take the phones out earlier for positive reasons.

Screens Down

Classroom Management
Maybe the two most powerful words you can say when managin devices in the classroom. "SCREENS DOWN"

The reason you put screens down is because if you put your phone down, I guarantee you that with in 15 seconds the student will get some ind of notification, from facebook, twitter, snapchat, you name it.

Screens Down means they can focus more on you the instructor.

Warning: The two worst things that you could say.
1) Put the devices away. - The reason for this is because it takes twice if not three times as long to bring them out, and they are going to be sneaking around trying to check messages. Might as well have them do it infront of you rather than hiding it.

2) We are only using the devices once today - This is when the students start sneaking around. Use the devices and use them often. Use them so much that its no longer cool to use them, and see how they start becoming a classroom tool rather than a FAD.

Learning 2.0

This is what learning looks like. Whether you realize it or not, accept it or not, Mobile devices are the new pencils.

Resources

So now you have a little understanding for Mobile devices, ideas, strategies, how to manage them. Now lets talk about resources.

ONLINE POLLS AND ASSESSMENTS

GoSOAPBOX.com

Confusion Barometer
Go Soap Box - http://gosoapbox.com/
GoSoapBox is used by educators around the world to break down participation barriers, keep students engaged, and gain insight into student comprehension.

Web-browser based polling, quiz, and discussion service that can be accessed by smart-phone, tablet, computer, or any other web-capable device.

Students can ask questions, contribute opinions, take quizzes, and more.
Instructors create events (such as lectures or recitation) and can attach quizzes, polls, and discussions to the event.

“Confusion Barometer” feature where students have the ability to toggle their status between either ‘I am getting it!’ or ‘I’m confused!’ allowing the instructor to see what percentage of the students are comprehending the lecture.

Cel.ly

Student Participation
Cel.ly allows you to send text message reminders, announcements, polls, and questions to your students.

Gives every child a "voice" and his/her opinion.

Sample use: Have a student text in a significant fact
or detail they learned to Cel.ly as they watch a video clip. After the video clip, I highlight some of the important topics discussed from their messages.

Analyze Responses with Cel.ly

InFUSE LEARNING

Student response through images.
Similar to Socrative, but also allows you to have students respond via images and drawings rather than text.

Polls

Polldaddy & Polleverywhere are great. Dont forget about free resources like Edmodo for polling.
