SUDAN

HISTORY

• Northern Sudan was in ancient times, Kingdom of Nubia.
• The " War of Darfur " started in February 2003. (Darfur is a region in Sudan)
• This began when the ( JEM ) and ( SLM ) went against government
• JEM - Justice and equality movement
• SLM - Sudan Liberation Movement

MORE INFORMATION

• Darfur is a mixed region with several tribes.
• This region has mainly African, and Arabic people
• The people here decided to fight back.

CONFLICT REASONS

• The main reason for this genocide is the rebellion
• JEM and SLM rebeled against the Arab government
• They were sick of not having food, and low quality living.
• Non-Arabs were targeted in this genocide.
• The government hired a " ethnic cleaning " which means killing non-Arabs

GOVERNMENT

• So the government didn't respond well to the rebel action of JEM & SLM
• They hired armed arab militants called Janjaweed
• Janjaweed means " devils riding horses "
