How does the moon affect the tides

BY MEGAN

Tides are very important to water related sports and activities. Since the tide changes every 6 hours from Low tide to High tide you have to make sure that the tide is where you want it to be. For example the best time to launch a boat would be at high tide because you could get stranded on a sand bank if you went at Low tide. Some of the sports that involve the tides are surfing, Sailing, Boating etc.

The tides change every 6 hours because of the moons gravitational pull. Although the moon is 400 km from earth it's gravitational pull pulls on the water and that creates bulges in the ocean on both sides of the planet. The moon pulls water towards it and this creates the bulges toward the moon. The bulges on the opposite side of the moon are caused by the moon pulling earth away from the water on that side.

King tides occur when the Earth, Sun and Moon are aligned at perigee a- (The point in the orbit of the moon or n satellite at which is nearest to earth) and perihelion - (The point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid or comet at which is closest to the sun) resulting in the largest tidal range seen over the course of the year. King tides occur approximately three months each Winter and again three months in Summer. During these months the highest tides are higher than average for 3-4 days.

The moon is 1/4 of earths size so the moon has less gravity than earth because it's smaller. The moon has gravity because the moon has mass. The moons gravity has a huge effect on the tides because of the moons gravitational pull.

In conclusion the tides are extremely important to us because there are lots of watersports and activities that involve the ocean and the tides. The moon plays a huge part too because of it's gravitational pull.
