The gift of time

20 minute talk

"Time is free, but it's Priceless."

Harvey Mackay
"Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can NEVER get it back."

Harvey Mackay

Found in the book The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson

If I had more time, I would...

Don't HAVE time, or Don't MAKE time?
When we say we "don't have time", what re are really saying is we "don't make time". What we spend our time on reflects our priorities. So make every minute count. Be conscious of what you spend your time doing. Make the most of each day. For example- while my son naps, I do a P90X3 video and listen to books (The Slight Edge is my current book) on audio.

To Be

Forget the "To Do" list
My friend Angela Maiers (TED Talk- You Matter, and co-founder of Choose2Matter) talks about creating a "To be" list. Don't focus so much on a "to do" list. Who do you want to be? Write it down and post it as a daily reminder.

You can't CHANGE what you don't MEASURE.

You can't change what you do not measure (funny story about this picture my 6 year old drew). Don't measure what the scale says. There are very unhealthy ways to loose weight. Don't measure how much money you make, money does NOT buy happiness. Measure how something makes you FEEL.

HAPPINESS Scale (1-10)

  • Health (Nutrition, Physical, Emotional)
  • Relationships (Spouse, Children, Friends, etc.)
  • Spirituality
  • Professionally
  • Personal growth
On a happiness scale of 1-10 (1=sad, 10=perfectly happy), rate each of these categories. The lowest one might just be the first thing you focus on.

What do you like about your life as it is today?

What don't you like about your life as it is today?

3:1 Energy Management

Energy in, energy out. Garbage in, garbage out.
The book "Flourish" talks about the 3 to 1 ratio. For every bad/stressful/negative thing in your life, you need 3 positive things to outweigh it. If you have a lower ratio, you might feel depressed, anxious, etc... The book "Off Balance" talks about managing your energy flow. There is food that gives you energy and food that takes energy away from you (sugar, processed carbs, etc.). There are also PEOPLE who give you energy and people who suck the ever-lovin life out of you!

Are you an artist?

What is creativity?
What does it mean to be an artist? What does it mean to be creative?

Steal like an artist

Free time: Find Your Creative Confidence
Michael loves Mo Willem's Pigeon books- so he started making his own. The book "Steal Like an Artist" talks about learning from creative people and copying what they do. Michael began drawing his own pigeon books, including "Don't Let the Pigeon Go To Costco", "Don't Let the Pigeon Turn 85 (for his great grandma)", and "Don't Let the Pigeon Teach 3rd Grade (for his aunt amy). When you give yourself TIME, and you do something you LOVE, you WILL find your own inner creativity.

Make your mark

Share your inner art
The Dot by Peter Reynolds is a great children's book that talks about making our mark on the world- Share the art that is inside of you and make your mark. Being artistic does not only mean drawing/painting/writing/etc. It means taking what's genuinely in your heart and sharing it with those you love. It could be baking, laughing, sewing, teaching, coaching, etc...

Reverse the Polarity

  • Drop it like it's hot!
  • Whoop! There it is!
  • Guess what day it is?!
  • Fun-day Monday
  • Growth mindset- I LOVE the morning
Tell yourself the opposite is true. I hate changing poopy diapers. So I sing silly songs like "Poop! There it is!" or "When Kellan gets a belly full he drops it like it's hot!". You can't not have fun changing a poopy diaper when you sing silly songs like that. I don't love getting up at 5:00 am in the morning, but I LOVE how I feel after I've spent the morning exercising or writing before my family wakes up. It helps set me up for the day.

Just 1 thing

1 Goal at a time
Research shows that having multiple goals lowers the chances of achieving any of them. So set 1 goal at a time. What is JUST ONE THING you could do. Make sure the goal is worded correctly. Don't say "I want to loose 5 pounds". Say- "I want to learn how to live a healthy, active lifestyle that is FUN for me and my family."

Gratitude

3 WWW and WHY
According to Positive Psychology, Gratitude is one of the most powerful ways to improve your overall happiness and quality of life. So each day try the 3 blessings exercise- write down 3 things that went well today, and write a few sentences on WHY they went well. Focusing on why will help you to identify positive behaviors, attitudes and habits.

The Slight Edge

"Every action that is easy to do, is also easy not to do."
It's easy to exercise 30 minutes a day 4-5 times a week. It's also easy not to. You have the freedom and power to choose. You won't see the results immediately. But if you continue to show up, every day, eventually you will see the fruits of your labor.

The biggest loser

Can you hang?
When you set goals to make positive change, the habits and systems you put in place must be sustainable. The Biggest Looser, although fun to watch, is not a lifestyle anyone can sustain. Experiment with different things until you find what you love. I went through about 20 different exercise programs and videos until I found a program that works for me. Don't take others advice. What works for them may not work for you. Do what works for you, something you can do every day!

Reflect

  • 3 Things you LEARNED
  • 2 Things you are going to DO
  • 1 PERSON you will share this with
Share 3 things you have learned, 2 things you are going to DO as a result of what you have learned, and 1 person that you feel needs to hear this message. Share it with them. Go back through this deck and explain it. The best way to learn something new is to TEACH it.

Love to all,
