BACKGROUND

• In 1994, the population was 85 percent Hutu and 14 percent Tutsi
• Hutu extremists blamed the Tutsi for the countries increasing problems
• The Hutu planned to destroy the entire Tutsi civilian population

CAUSES OF CONFLICT

• The Tutsi began to behave as if they were of a higher class than the Hutu
• They tended to be landowners and the Hutu worked the land
• The Tutsi were accused of supporting a Tutsi dominated rebel group

THE GENOCIDE

• Up to a million people died
• Was entirely done by hand; often using machetes and clubs
• Men who were trained to massacre joined death squads
• Tutsi men, women and children were murdered in thousands in schools
• Few survived
