An Active Shooter -

  • Is actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.
  • Is unpredictable.
  • Requires immediate deployment of law enforcement to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims.

How to Respond

  • Evacuate if there is an accessible escape path.
  • Hide out if evacuation is not possible.

Evacuate

  • Have an escape route in mind.
  • Leave regardless of whether others agree to follow.
  • Leave your belongings behind.
  • Help others escape, if possible.
  • Call 911 when you are safe.
  • Follow instrtuctions of police officers.

Your Hiding Place Should -

  • Be out of the shooter's view.
  • Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction.
  • Not trap you or restrict your options for movement.
  • Lock or blockade the door with heavy furniture.

Self-Training Activities

  • Identify all potential hiding places
  • Identify locking doors
  • Identify all escape routes

Calling 911

  • Leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen.
  • Provide location of the shooter.
  • Give number of shooters, if more than one.
  • Provide physical description/s.
  • Give number and type of weapons.
  • Give number of potential victims.
