Slide Notes

New apps rely on positive word of mouth and the support of people unafraid to test new waters.

I am an elementary instructional technology professional in a large school district north of Dallas. I have had the opportunity to share Haiku Deck with my students, staff, peer group, and teachers around Texas.

Why do I want to be a guru? I enjoy being innovative. I like knowing what's new and sharing it with others. I like that you made a fantastic product and didn't hesitate to make it even better. I like that you email me directly to touch base because you care about your product.

GURUS

LEADERS AND INNOVATORS

CREATIVE

SEE TECH OPPORTUNITIES AS A CANVAS
Finding opportunities for teachers and students to create beautiful presentations with simplicity is key in my role as a Media Resource Specialist.

With Haiku Deck, the art of streamlined text paired with eye catching images makes telling any story easy.

Showcasing learning across all content areas is like painting a portrait. Gurus love when the finished product looks like a million bucks!

TRAILBLAZER

UNAFRAID TO KICK THE TIRES
You want a guru who is not afraid to try new things. I actively participate in Twitter PLNs and through this forum I was introduced early to Haiku Deck.

The day I heard of it, I immediately began to play. I made a quickie demo to share with a team of ELAR teachers and they were on board!

One hour later, 4th graders were making book trailers. They even taught me a thing or two about Haiku Deck's features.

This guru wannabe isn't afraid to test drive!

MOUTHPIECE

SHARE THEIR FINDINGS WILLINGLY
Any guru worth their salt will proudly trumpet to their coworkers, peers, conference attendees and PLN about the greatness of their product.

Since discovering Haiku Deck, I have tweeted several student products, shared digital storytelling ideas at TCEA (Texas Computer Educators Association), exchanged "favorites" with my work group, and will share at DENapalooza when it stops in the Dallas area.

I'm not afraid to present the app directly, or to use Haiku Deck as the platform of the presentation itself.

Gurus must always grow! Change is the only constant.

Most recently, with the launch of Haiku Deck 2.0, I immediately updated my peers on its awesome additions. Previous professional development pages promoting the product were instantly updated.

I began testing the new features so I would be able to speak from experience and guide anyone needing assistance.

The graphing tool has now provided a new forum for student created work as they will make their own infographics.

INTEGRATOR

IDENTIFY PERFECT TIMES TO CREATE
The use of technology has to be strategic. Tech for tech's sake becomes a robber of instructional time. Often the upfront investment in the main lesson pales in comparison to the enormous digital undertaking of a complex project.

Haiku Deck allows for a brainstormed project to be created in a brief amount of time. Students reflect on the unwritten message required of the image while thoughtfully emphasizing main ideas and supporting details in the text.

Critical thinking and communicating are embedded lessons as learning comes to life through Haiku Deck.

SOUND GOOD?

I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU @LMSKAREN
If nothing else, it was fun to reflect on how easy it was to use this app with kids beginning in second grade, who are independent and visionary to "get" the goal of effective story telling.

I appreciate the opportunity!
