31st Mar, 1889 inaguration The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated on March 31, 1889.
6th May, 1889 Opened ; The Eiffel Tower was inagurated in March but wasnt opened until May.
10th Sep, 1889 Special Visitor Thomas Edison visited the Tower.
28th May, 1902; the eiffel tower was struck by lightning. 100m of the top had to be reconstructed and the lights that illuminate the tower had to be replaced.
28th Feb, 1925 Scrap Metal In 1925, the con artsist victor Lustig twice "sold" the tower for scrap metal.
29th Jun, 1930 No longer the tallest building, The tower lost its title as the worlds largest structure due to the Chrysler building in New York City.
28th Aug, 1944 Allies near Paris When the allies were near Paris Hitler ordered Dietrich von Choltitz, a general, ot demolish the city along with the Tower, but the general ignored the order.
3rd Jan, 1956 Fire In 1956 a fire damged the top of the tower.
28th Feb, 1985 James Bond In 1985 the James Bond movie, A View To Kill, Grace Jones parachuted the tower.
28th Apr, 2004 Ice Skating Rink SInce '04 the first floor of the tower has been used as an ice skating rink during Winter time
WHY WAS IT BUILT?
- was erected for the Paris Exposition of 1889
- Built to celebrate the science and engineering achievements of its age
HOW WAS IT BUILT?
- consists of two visibly distinct parts, a base composed of a platform resting on four separate supports (called pylons or bents) and, above this, a slender tower created as the bents taper upward, rising above a second platform to merge in a unified column.
- 300 workers, 18,038 pieces of wrought iron, 2.5 million rivets, 10,000 tons, 984.25 feet high.
