New Zealand is one of the last places on earth to be inhabited by people. Maori were the first settlers.then came the Dutch and English people followed by the Chinese and Taiwanese.

TODAY OF THE 4.4 MILLION ZEW ZEALANDERS

  • 69% are of English decent
  • 14.6% are of the indigenous Maori
  • 9.2% are of Asian decent
  • 6.9 are of non-Maori pacific decent

In 2011 New Zealands estimated population of 4.4 million people up from the 4,027,947 of 2006. This is a great rise in the population of New Zealand.

On 13 December 1642, Abel Janszoon Tasman sighted New Zealand but he could not reach there because of bad weather.

Captain James Cook,who reached New Zealand on October 1769 on the first of his three voyages.

The Dutch people sailed to New Zealand many times during the 18th century and began to settle there as traders to the Maori people

The Dutch settlers attracted many other European settlers mainly German,Spanish,Irish and English.

From 1840 till 1904 New Zealand was a British colony.today the British and the Maori live in harmony. Maoris also represent the government and have a equal part in the governing system as the English.

When Maori first arrived from tropical Polynesia they brought with them a number of food plants,including kūmara(sweet potato),taro and fi plants.the plants grew only in north of the north island. Native New Zealand plants such as the frenroot became an important part of the diet including insects such as huhu grub.

New Zealand art is a visual art consists of :carving, tattooing (ta moko), weaving and painting. Traditional Maori art was highly spiritual and was source to convey information about spiritual matters, ancestry, and other culturally important matters.
