PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NEUTRON STARS

BY: MATT BOSWELL , MATT BURKETT, BRENDAN GRAY, BRITTANI SINGLETON

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Very dense and spin very fast
  • They are the size of a city
  • Don't glow
  • Formed from burnt out stars

PULSARS

  • Neutron stars emit radio waves
  • They pulse on and off
  • When the pulse is on the earth receives radio waves
  • The escaping radio waves sweep around like the light beam from a lighthouse

COLLIDING NEUTRON STARS

  • Pairs of neutron stars can create violent events if they collided.
  • At 15.3 seconds into the simulated collision, a black hole has already formed with the mass of 2.9 suns
  • At. 26.5 milliseconds, a jet like magnetic field emerges at the poles of the spinning black hole.
  • Colliding neutron stars are predicted to produce gravitational waves.

HOW DO WE DETECT THEM

  • They don't give off light so it's hard to see them
  • Astronomers can find neutron stars by observing the gravitational effects on objects near by
  • They can also find them because they emit x rays, satellite can observe the x rays in the sky

FUN FACTS

  • It's material would have a mass over 5.5 times ten to the twelfth kilograms, about nine hundred times the mass of the great pyramid of Giza
  • They rotate severs times every second, some can get to several hundreds of revolution set seconds
  • They can warp light
  • They make gravity crazy
  • They are not made of neutrons
