KLINEFELTERS SYNDROME

WHAT IS IT?

  • When males contain extra X chromosome
  • Results in XXY
  • Chromosomal condition that affects male physical development

WHAT DOES IT AFFECT?

  • Results in small testes
  • Affects male sex organs
  • Producing less testosterone
  • Incompletion of puberty

WHO DISCOVERED?

  • Named after Dr. Henry Klinefelter
  • He first discovered that some men had an extra X chromosome
  • Not everyone has the effects of Klinefelters

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS?

  • Results in small testes
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Very wide hips
  • Long legs
  • Less facial and body hair/less energy

HOW IS IT TREATED?

  • No definite cure
  • Testosterone therapy helps increase muscle strength
  • Not much you can do you just live with it

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

  • A chromosomal analysis confirms the syndrome
  • (Blood test)
  • See if you have any chromosomal abnormalities

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

  • By a random mutation in fetal development
  • Is not hereditary
  • Ongoing studies continue of the syndrome
