CAUSES

  • Slavery- South was based upon slavery but north wasn't .
  • States Rights- Many states believed they were a slave state.
  • Economic Differences- South was based on farming and North was based on industrial and factory's.

Battle of Fort Sumter

  • Significance- First battle of the civil war.
  • Confederate won.
  • Union- "we will not surrender"
  • Confederate- "we opened fire and they had to surrender"

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • Significance- It was the bloodiest day of the war.
  • Union victory.
  • Union- "we lost a lot of people,but we won because confederate withdrew
  • Confederate- Too many people are dead we will withdraw"

BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

  • Significance- It was a chance of chance of encounter.
  • Union victory.
  • Union- "we took advantage of an opportunity"
  • Confederate- "we came to get supplies and ran into the union army

  • Significance- The confederacy was split in two.
  • Union victory.
  • Union- "we can regain control of the Mississippi River"
  • Confederate- "after 6 weeks, we had to surrender"

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • Significance- Declared that all slaves in areas still in rebellion were free.
  • "We are Free"

  • Significance- General Lee surrenders.
  • Union victory.
  • Union- "Its done"
  • Confederate- "we were surroundedand had to surrender"

  • Confederate- Jefferson Davis
  • Lincoln- "This war didnt need to happen"
