About Me

By Catherine Carr, VP of Marketing and Chief Inspiration Officer for Haiku Deck - My background, what makes me tick, and my philosophy, in Haiku Deck form.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HI, I'M CATHERINE

I HEAD UP MARKETING

FOR HAIKU DECK
When I did brand consulting, Haiku Deck was one of my (favorite) clients.

I've been working with Haiku Deck since April 2012, and I joined the team full-time in January 2013.

The weeks and months fly by because we are so busy building an amazing community and product, and having kind of a ridiculous amount of fun in the process.

DELAWARE

MY HOME STATE AND FAVORITE PLACE
This scene is from Rehoboth Beach, hands down my favorite place on earth. This is where real summer happens, people.

WILLIAM & MARY

WHERE I WENT TO COLLEGE (AND MET MY HUSBAND)
Another beautiful and special place, and I'm pretty proud to count Thomas Jefferson and Jon Stewart as fellow graduates.

My husband played bass for a band called the Flannel Animals, which keeps getting invited to play at reunions, so we go back fairly frequently.

The result of that tiny sliver of pie spent in Bogota is that I speak pretty decent Spanish.

The same cannot be said for Slovene, I'm afraid. But it was a nice place to live for a while, and to use as our home base when we backpacked around Europe after college.

ENGLISH AND ART HISTORY

WHAT I STUDIED
This is the Ishtar Gate. Seeing it in person at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin was a life highlight.

When I was in college I thought I would become an art history professor.

Perhaps I still might.

CONTENT AND BRAND DEVELOPMENT

WHAT I ENDED UP DOING
I didn't end up going the art history route, but I have always loved working with words, and I particularly love how great content, branding, and marketing intertwine to create vibrant stories and communities.

I chose an image of a garden because that's how I think of building community. It takes time and patience, but you plant lots of seeds and take care of it, and you can grow something really beautiful.

I LED THE EDITORIAL TEAM (AND WORKED WITH ADAM)
I first crossed paths with Adam (the co-founder of Haiku Deck) at Cranium, where I built and led the editorial team. His office was next to mine, and we both enjoyed building community and creative marketing.

Also, laughing.

Also, loud funk music.

MISC. ADVENTURES

The 1,000-mile tandem bike trip was for our honeymoon. We rode from New Orleans up to Delaware, and there was a great story at least every 100 miles.

My Portland marathon time is nothing to brag about, but I did it with my dad---another life highlight.

Flash mob = Seattle Asian Art Museum steps, about 50 friends and kids, and a choreographed dance routine to "Lovely Day" for a friend's birthday. Fantastic.

SUPPORTING FORAYS INTO EXTREME SPORTS
My husband's racing exploits have taken us to Louisville, Phoenix, Kona, and Penticton (among other amazing places).

I do a lot of laundry, but the experience has really enriched our family life.

Here would be a great place to link to my blogs, but unfortunately two of them were on Posterous and I haven't had a chance to recreate them yet.

One was a collection of my grandfather's old letters, and the other was "home economista."

FAMILY DINNER

ONE OF MY PRIORITIES
If you follow me on Twitter (@mamatweeta), I like to tweet what I'm making for #familydinner.

Some people find cooking stressful, but I find it fun and relaxing.

Also, when I cook, I can be darn sure there aren't any onions (see slide 12).

HOMEMADE BOLOGNESE

I MAKE A MEAN ONE
I don't have an ounce of Italian blood in me, but I totally cook like an Italian grandmother.
Homemade bolognese is probably my favorite thing to make. I even made a Haiku Deck of the recipe:
